Dance on Film: The 1990’s

  1. House Party (1990) | Dance Off- A.J. Johnson, Tisha Campbell, Kid N’ Play, & Cast

Everything you could ever wish from a house party- fun, lively, and social. A true party! Choreographer unknown/ improvised.

  2. Stepping Out (1991) | Liza’s Solo- Liza Minnelli

Vulnerable and intense, this solo dance rehearsal scene truly shines a light on Liza Minnelli’s star power, both as a dancer and actress. Choreographed by Danny Daniels.

  3. Scent of A Woman (1992) | The Tango- Gabrielle Anwar & Al Pacino

Endearing and awkwardly romantic, Al Pacino plays the role of a blind man teaching a young lady how to dance the tango. Choreographed by Paul Pellicoro.

  4. Strictly Ballroom (1992) | Disqualification- Paul Mercurio & Tara Morice

Another tango, yet this one is full of passion, energy, and vigour, showing true competitive spirit within the dance competition setting. Choreographed by John ‘Cha Cha’ O’Connell.

  5. Swing Kids (1993) | Sing, Sing, Sing- Tushka Bergen, Robert Sean Leonard & Everyone

True 1940’s nostalgia, this scene illustrates the carefree and fun-loving nature of swing dancing, that starkly contrasts the dark period of history in which it is set. Choreographed by Otis Sallid.

  6. The Mask (1994) | Coco Bongo- Jim Carey & Cameron Diaz

Another swing-style dance, including some superhero-level special effects and a disconcerting bright green mask. Choreographed by Jerry Evans.

  7. The First Wives Club (1996) | You Don’t Own Me- Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, & Bette Midler

A sweet, comedic, and heart-warming sing-a-long dance scene, between three tipsy women in an empty party venue, entirely dressed in white. Choreographed by Lisa Stevens.

  8. The Tango Lesson (1997) | Libertango- Sally Potter & Pablo Verón

An incredibly arty and romantic scene, in which four people elegantly and seamlessly dance the tango together. Choreographed by Pablo Verón.

  9. Titanic (1997) | Third Class Dance- Kate Winslet & Leonardo DiCaprio

While in the lower-class quarters of the ship, Jack and Rose partake in some Irish dancing. Choreographer unknown.

  10. She’s All That | Prom Scene (1999)- Everyone

Certainly a prom like no other, with the dance club gracing everyone with a fully rehearsed dance routine. Choreographed by Adam Shankman.

Bonus:

  1. Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion (1997) | Time After Time- Lisa Kudrow, Mira Sorvino, & Alan Cumming

This trio truly perfected their performance of an incredibly juvenile ‘high-school’ dance routine, that although may be innocent for teenagers to perform, is a little cringeworthy and creepy for three grown adults. Choreographed by Smith Wordes.
